The Major Phases of a Typical Construction Project

Starting a home project—whether it's a deck, an addition, or a full renovation—can feel overwhelming if you're not sure what the process looks like. At Build Moore Exteriors, our goal is to make every step clear so you always know what's happening and why.

Below is a simple breakdown of the major phases of a typical construction project.

1. Initial Consultation

Every project begins with a conversation. This is where we learn what you're trying to achieve, what your home needs, and what challenges we may need to plan around.

You'll share your goals, timing needs, budget, and any inspiration you have.

2. Site Visit & Measurements

Next, we visit your home to evaluate the space.

We look at the structure, measurements, access points, grading, utilities, and anything that might affect the project.

This helps us identify opportunities and flag potential issues early.

3. Design & Planning

This is where your ideas turn into a buildable plan.

Depending on the project, this phase may include:

- Draftsman drawings

- Engineer-stamped plans

- Structural layouts

- Material selections

- Layout adjustments based on your feedback

Good planning prevents costly surprises later.

4. Permitting

Once the design is complete, plans are submitted to the county for review.

In North Carolina, permit timing varies widely based on county workload, project type, and inspection cycles.

We handle all submissions and communicate with the permit office so you don't have to.

This phase varies by project complexity and local review conditions, so we avoid giving a fixed timeframe until the details are known.

5. Material Ordering

After permits are approved, materials are ordered.

Lead times depend on the items you choose—standard materials may be quick, while custom items (windows, doors, cabinets, etc.) can take longer.

We keep you updated so you always know what stage your project is in.

6. Demolition & Prep Work

Before building begins, existing structures or surfaces may need to be removed.

This phase includes any demo work, site clearing, and preparing the area for the next stage.

7. Foundation & Framing

For additions and sunrooms, foundation work comes first.

Once the foundation is ready, framing begins—this is when your project finally starts to take shape.

Decks and porches also require structural framing, though typically on a smaller scale.

8. Trades & Rough-in Work

At this stage, electricians, plumbers, and HVAC professionals complete the rough-in tasks.

This includes wiring, pipes, ductwork, and anything that will be hidden inside walls or ceilings.

All rough-in work is inspected before moving forward.

9. Insulation & Drywall

After inspections, the project moves into insulation and drywall.

These steps define the interior structure and prepare it for finishes.

10. Exterior & Interior Finishes

This phase brings your project to life with:

- Siding

- Roofing

- Flooring

- Cabinets

- Countertops

- Paint

- Trim

- Fixtures

- Final details

Every part of the home begins to look complete.

11. Final Inspections

Before the project is finished, county inspectors verify that everything meets code.

We coordinate every inspection and handle any follow-up needed.

12. Final Walkthrough

Once the project passes inspections, we take you on a walkthrough.

Together we look at the details, answer questions, and make sure everything meets your expectations.

Any final touch-ups are completed at this stage.

13. Project Completion

The best part—your new space is ready to enjoy.

Whether you've added a deck, built a new room, or renovated a kitchen, this is where your vision becomes real.
